Eat cheap: Lula B’s
OMAHA, Neb. (KMTV) – A metro restaurant celebrates its first anniversary next month. Lula B’s says it’s downtown Omaha’s breakfast, brunch and bar.
It is located near 9th and Dodge near the Capitol District. 3 News Now Anchor Serese Cole checked it out in this week’s Cheap Eats.
There’s something surprisingly appetizing about a good brunch.
“It’s a special time of day to get together. It’s not about going out for cocktails or happy hour or anything like that. It’s brunch. You can have a mimosa or you can have a coffee. You can have both. You can have a sandwich or pancakes or both if you like that,” said general manager Alyssa Roach.
That’s exactly what Roach says they love about Lula B.
Whether you’re dining indoors and sipping Stories coffee or soaking up the sun on the spacious terrace, the atmosphere is fun and unique.
“We have a casual work vibe during the week and on the weekends it’s brunch night – central brunch night,” laughed Roach.
But Roach says the food is what sets this place apart.
“Lula B’s is basically a breakfast and brunch spot with a Mexican twist,” she explained.
Arlette Becerra took Serese to the Lula B kitchen to see that Mexican flair up close.
His family is co-owner of the place.
All their recipes come from Mexico and have been passed down from generation to generation.
“My mom and aunts brought that into this kitchen, and they brought their flavors and tastes from their home country of central Mexico, and that’s what makes this food so delicious,” Becerra explained. .
It’s a family affair. Chef Satu works alongside his son. Together they prepare the best dishes here Lula’s B’s.
The Meggzican omelet is the most popular.
“It’s stuffed with chorizo and birria meat. Then it’s topped with spicy gauc sauce and it’s to die for,” Roach described.
They also do a big cheese burrito.
It is loaded with your choice of meat. Roach recommends the carne asada. It also comes with Mexican rice, refried beans, cheese, and pico de gallo.
A generous spread of their homemade queso completes it.
If you’re craving something sweet, Strawberry French Toast is also a favorite.
“It’s also my mother’s recipe,” Becerra proudly says.
Homemade dough is key. We smell nutmeg and cinnamon, but this family recipe stays in the family.
“I can’t tell his secret now, can I?” Becerra asked with a smile.
The end product is a beautiful culinary creation, perfected with a sprinkle of powdered sugar.
Breakfast, brunch and more in one of the hottest neighborhoods in town.
“It was exciting. We’re a little off the beaten path, but I think we’re catchy enough for people to be – oh what is this place,” Roach said.
